Average Daily Sales

Etsy: Report how much each shop sells on an average day, and say which shop performs best.

Assignment

The marketplace team is putting together a monthly performance summary for a handful of shops and wants to know how much each one sells on an average day, so the shops can be compared with each other. They have shared two exports: the sales recorded for April, and a table of the shops themselves.

Deliverables

  • The average daily sales for each shop in April.
  • Which shop sells the most on an average day, and which is the steadiest.
  • A short closing report for the marketplace team, covering the figures and anything they should know before comparing the shops.

Data Description

daily_sales.csv is the sales the reporting system recorded for April:

  • sale_date
  • shop_id
  • orders
  • gross_sales_usd

shops.csv has one row per shop:

  • shop_id
  • shop_name
  • joined_on - the date the shop opened on the marketplace

Practicalities

You can solve this in Python, SQL, or a mix of both — StrataScratch notebooks support both languages in the same notebook.

Assume this data comes directly from the marketplace reporting system and hasn't been cleaned, so review it carefully before relying on the numbers. When something looks off, work out what it is and decide how to handle it; when a definition or a final decision is genuinely ambiguous, choose a reasonable option and explain why. There's often more than one valid way to compute a result, so explain the approach you take and the reasoning behind your choices.

What's assessed: your results, and how clearly you explain what you see in the data and justify the choices you make.
