E-commerce & retail Analytics Engineer Interview Loop
Analytics engineers here own the definitions the business runs on, like gross merchandise value, conversion, repeat rate and margin after returns. Product and seller hierarchies change all the time, and the analytics engineer interview checks whether you can keep those definitions trustworthy anyway. There's a recruiter or hiring-manager screen and a SQL screen. Then come three to five rounds: advanced SQL, data modeling, transformation and testing, and a stakeholder conversation. Shopify's "Life Story" round and Walmart's assessment both apply. There's no statistics round.

SQL basics at speed on order, product and customer tables: joins, aggregations, distinct counts and date functions. Explain your join path in a sentence and move on.
Advanced SQL: window functions, ranking, rolling and cumulative metrics, deduplication, top-N with ties, and funnels from view to purchase. Then come the questions that run through it. What breaks in GMV when a product moves to a new category? What would you precompute for a merchandising report, and what would you compute on demand?

End-to-end projects on commerce data. The projects and mini-analyses are the round: revenue by category, stock on hand, average daily sales and store contribution margin. The metric you produce has to match between finance and merchandising, and you have to defend the transformation logic.
