E-commerce & retail Data Engineer Interview Loop
E-commerce data engineers build order, inventory and clickstream pipelines with a hard peak. A system that works in March has to work on the busiest weekend of the year, and data engineer interviews test for that. There's a recruiter call and a technical screen on SQL and Python. Then come four to five rounds: a SQL deep dive, coding and ETL, data modeling and warehouse design, system design, and behavioral. Walmart's outside assessment and Shopify's "Life Story" round apply to engineers too. Scale counts for more than algorithms. The domain adds stock levels that change all the time, orders with many items, and sellers that matter as much as buyers.

Practice by round
SQL and Python basics under time on order, product, inventory and customer tables. That's joins, aggregations, distinct rows and date handling, then dictionaries, lists, counting and complexity. At Walmart, getting the basics right is literally how you pass.

SQL at loop level: a customers report summary, account registrations, product market share, order details, and negative reviews in new locations. The Python is asked as a concept: which data structure fits which job. The scale question here is about the peak, so answer with what you'd precompute before it arrives.

Pipeline reasoning and projects on commerce data. There's a design question on a replacements-recommendation system. Then come the projects and mini-analyses, which are most of this round: sales data analysis, data transformation, revenue by category, and stock on hand. Order, product and inventory tables go in, and a working dataset comes out.
