Social, media & entertainment Data Scientist Interview Loop
These companies hire data scientists to decide what to change on products that hundreds of millions of people use, and the data scientist interview tests exactly that. There's a recruiter call, then a technical screen that pairs SQL with a product question and sets your level early. Then come five to eight conversations: SQL and analysis, experiments, product and subject depth, and a culture or values interview. Netflix stands out most. Every interviewer has to sign off, so one concern ends the process, and "Why Netflix?" is a real question about your judgment. Spotify puts a week-long take-home between the screen and the final round. You present it to a panel that includes a PM and a user researcher, and that's where most of its rejections happen.
Companies behind this pattern
Practice by round
SQL on user behavior data, like users, sessions, plays and connections, with a product question next to it. Expect joins, aggregations and filters at speed. Then: what would this number tell you about the feature?
Medium and hard SQL on the kind of tables these teams keep: top streamers and best artists, reviews per star, sessions by initial viewers, and salaries by department. Then comes the follow-up on what the number says about the audience.
The product case: a framework for investigating a KPI drop, new-user engagement, daily active users, improving a user profile, influencer metrics, and whether Stories are too hard to make. Find the cause, propose what to do, define the metrics, and say which one you'd trust.
| Case study | Difficulty |
|---|---|
| Favorite Product or App | Easy |
| Yelp Feature | Easy |
| Influencer Metrics | Medium |
| Measuring Social Media Campaign Success | Medium |
| KPI Drop Investigation Framework | Medium |
Experiments and their statistics: comparing two groups, working out test length, whether a survey response is random, conversion rate, and Bayesian versus frequentist. The real round may also ask what happens when recommendations change for everyone at once, so practice that too.
| Question | Difficulty |
|---|---|
| Calculation of Test Duration | Easy |
| Survey Response Randomness | Easy |
| Certain Factor Predicts Certain Outcome | Easy |
| Conversion Rate | Easy |
| Comparing Two Groups | Easy |
