Fintech & payments AI Engineer Interview Loop
There isn't a standard AI engineer interview in fintech. AI engineering roles at Stripe, Block and PayPal follow the ML engineering pattern. There's a technical screen that mixes ML or LLM concepts with a coding problem, then a coding round, an AI system design round and a values round. What they share is the domain and what's at stake. These are fraud, risk, dispute and support systems. A false positive blocks a real customer's payment, a false negative loses money, and a model has to explain itself to a regulator.

ML basics asked fast, with no SQL: a credit card fraud model, a credit-risk scoring model, covariate imbalance, GBM or logistic regression, and what to do when a model is a black box. There's a coding problem too. Precision versus recall, and what each one costs in payments, runs through all of it.
| Question | Difficulty |
|---|---|
| Credit Risk Scoring Model | Easy |
| Perform KNN | Easy |
| Black Box Model | Easy |
| Submission Types | Easy |
| Churn | Easy |
| Positions Of Letter 'a' | Easy |
| First Name with Right Whitespace Removed | Easy |
| Last Five Records of Dataset | Easy |
Medium and hard coding, plus the data handling payment AI systems are built on. That means SQL and Python over transaction, account and event tables: money moving between parties, ledger-style self-joins, and windows over sequences of transactions.
| Question | Difficulty |
|---|---|
| Variable vs Fixed Rates | Medium |
| Share of Loan Balance | Medium |
| Recent Refinance Submissions | Medium |
| Third Highest Total Transaction | Medium |
| Highest Salaried Employees By Department | Medium |
| Super Managers | Medium |
| High-Density Areas | Medium |
| Employees With Same Birth Month | Hard |
AI system design in fintech terms: an AI-powered fraud detection system, an LLM-powered text classification API, and evaluating a recommender online against offline. Scope the task and choose between rules, classical ML and generation. Design the evaluation. Then talk about latency at authorization time, explainability, and what happens to a real person when the system gets it wrong.
| Case study | Difficulty |
|---|---|
| Performers with MapReduce | Easy |
| Evaluating Recommender Systems: Online vs. Offline | Medium |
| AI-Powered Fraud Detection System Design | Hard |
| Data project | Difficulty |
|---|---|
| Fraudsters Detection | Medium |
| Expenses and Income Prediction | Medium |
| Flagging Loans | Hard |
Churn and fraud models, finding who cheated, identifying peak points, data quality issues, KNN and GBM versus logistic regression, and evaluating a recommender both ways. This is the classical ML that most production risk systems still run on.
| Question | Difficulty |
|---|---|
| GBM or Logistic Regression | Medium |
| Credit Card Fraud Model | Medium |
| Data Quality Issue | Hard |
| Identify Peak Points | Hard |
| Covariate Imbalance | Hard |
| LLM-Powered Text Classification API Design | Hard |
