Editing Employee Records

You must be logged in to download the datasets

Accenture: Apply approved salary updates and remove departed employees from the employee table.

Assignment

The HR operations team has exported three files from the employee system ahead of the next payroll run: the current employee records, a list of approved salary updates, and a list of departure notices. They want the employee table brought up to date.

Deliverables

  • The employee table with the approved salary updates applied.
  • The records of departed employees removed.
  • A short closing report of your findings for the HR operations team, including anything they should double-check before relying on the numbers.

Data Description

accenture_employee_records.csv - the current employee table:

  • employee_id
  • full_name
  • department
  • salary
  • hire_date

accenture_salary_updates.csv - the approved salary updates:

  • employee_id
  • new_salary
  • effective_date - when the new salary takes effect

accenture_departure_notices.csv - the departure notices:

  • employee_id
  • departure_date

Practicalities

You can solve this in Python, SQL, or a mix of both — StrataScratch notebooks support both languages in the same notebook.

Assume this data comes directly from the HR system and hasn't been cleaned, so review it carefully before relying on the numbers. When something looks off, work out what it is and decide how to handle it; when a definition or a final decision is genuinely ambiguous, choose a reasonable option and explain why. There's often more than one valid way to compute a result, so explain the approach you take and the reasoning behind your choices.

What's assessed: your results, and how clearly you explain what you see in the data and justify the choices you make.
