E-commerce & retail Financial Analyst Interview Loop
Financial analysts here sit in FP&A, merchandising finance or seller finance. The work, and so the interview, is margin and inventory math at scale: gross margin after returns and promotions, inventory turns, and contribution by category. The loop is the corporate finance pattern. There's a recruiter call, then a phone screen that's mostly behavioral with a finance question. After that come four to five rounds that mix a modeling or business case with behavioral interviews and a hiring-manager conversation. Walmart's and Shopify's first steps apply to finance candidates too.

Finance and data basics under time. The SQL is on order, revenue and cost tables, like the total cost of orders, highest-cost orders, processing a refund and the most profitable location. In the real loop there are reasoning checks too. What moves gross margin, and how does a promotion show up in the numbers?

The business case in retail terms. You forecast a category, size a free-shipping change, or decide whether a program is worth running after returns, then present and defend it. This round covers the presentation half: the charts a finance review runs on, like waterfall, timeline, stacked area and bar, and a line graph of the trend. You build them from order and revenue data, with a project to carry the math. The mini-analyses on store contribution margin, revenue by category and stock on hand sit on this industry's Data Scientist and Analytics Engineer pages. Practice them too.
